PLAINWELL -- During the brief moments when they were not embracing friends and family before a ceremony to honor their son Monday, Lance and Denise Allers held hands in silence.
Toward the end of the service,Lance Allers stood from his seat and held his arms out to the crowd. He then crossed his hands over his heart and nodded his head.
He used no words to express the gratitude and appreciation he felt toward community members gathered at the Veterans Memorial in Plainwell's Sherwood Park, where a special ceremony was held to honor his son, Pvt. Thomas Allers.

Bryan Allers, Thomas Allers' uncle, said the family is extremely grateful and thankful for all of the love and support they have been shown since his nephew was killed May 23 in Afghanistan.

Thomas Allers, 23, of Plainwell, was one of four U.S. Army soldiers killed by an improvised explosive device in Kunar province.

An only child, Allers was "closer with his parents than anyone else," said Paul Matusiak, 22, one of Allers' best friends. He said the family is "overwhelmed by the community's support."
The ceremony for Allers made this year's Memorial Day parade and observance especially poignant in Plainwell, where Allers graduated from high school in 2006.
Memorial Day was especially poignant this year for the Plainwell community, as it fell exactly one week after Allers was killed in combat in Afghanistan.

People lined the streets of the parade route, waving American flags and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with Allers' photo. Some showed their support with cheers and salutes as veterans and memorials for Allers passed, while others were solemn and emotional throughout the procession.
Local American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars posts received standing ovations and applause as they marched at the head of the parade. They led around 30 other businesses and organizations on the two-mile parade route.
Immediately following the parade, community members crowded around a commemorative ceremony for Allers at the Veterans Memorial along the Kalamazoo River in Sherwood Park.
Encircled by 23 Patriot Guard Riders holding American flags, the service was opened by a local pastor who led community members in a prayer before Plainwell Mayor Richard Brooks read a proclamation that described Allers as a "son, friend, coworker and soldier" defined by "strength, honor and courage."
Brooks listed Allers' many military credentials, which include a Purple Heart and National Defense Service Medal, among others. He then presented Lance and Denise Allers with a plaque honoring the sacrifice of their son and their family.
An Army lieutenant colonel said in his address that Allers was a "true citizen soldier" who exemplified the seven Army values of "loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage."
After an honor guard salute over the Kalamazoo River, people in the park stood silently but for the stifled sniffles of grieving friends and family as "Taps" was played. There was a brief moment of silence before a benediction was given by another community pastor to conclude the program.
Most of the attendees congregated in small groups after the ceremony ended to comfort crying friends, pay respects to the family and remember the dedicated and caring man that Allers was.
Plainwell's population of around 4,000 people means everybody knows each other on some level, Brooks said.
"They hurt for the Allers," Brooks said. "I knew everyone would come out like this. It's just how we are here."
Brooks said he is proud to be a part of such a "tight-knit" community. He ensured Lance and Denise Allers that he and the rest of the town would be available to provide anything the family needs in the coming days, weeks and years."

Congress narrowly votes against troop withdrawal from Afghanistan!

Afghanistan Withdrawal Measure Falls Just 12 Votes Short Of Passage In Congress
Posted: 05/26/11 04:09 PM ET
"WASHINGTON -- In its first votes on the war in Afghanistan since the killing of Osama bin Laden, Congress sent a strong message to President Obama that its patience for the conflict is wearing thin.
"A measure requiring the President to present a plan "with a timeframe and completion date" for the transfer of military operations to Afghan authorities failed 204-215. It would also have mandated a plan for "negotiations leading to a political solution and reconciliation in Afghanistan" and a new National Intelligence Estimate on al Qaeda.
"The withdrawal measure was offered as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which would authorize $690 billion in defense spending for the next fiscal year.
"The amendment, co-sponsored by Reps. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Walter Jones (R-N.C.), gained the support of 178 Democrats and 26 Republicans. A similar amendment in the last Congress received 138 votes in support, but only seven of those were cast by Republicans.
"This time, freshmen Republican lawmakers formed the largest bloc in the party in voting for the McGovern amendment, and it picked up the support of three GOP members of the House Armed Services Committee.
"President Obama has promised a drawdown of U.S. troops in July. Now we hear that might just be a token drawdown. This amendment -- and the vote on this amendment -- can send the President a clear signal of support for a meaningful drawdown of troops," said McGovern before the vote.
"Reps. Pete Welch (D-Vt.) and Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) co-sponsored a similar amendment, which would have required the Defense Secretary to present a plan to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan except those engaged in counter-terrorism activities. It failed on a vote of 123 to 294 but gained the support of 18 Republicans. A similar measure this year received 93 votes, just eight of which were from Republicans.
"This is a very clear sign that Congress wants a new policy in Afghanistan," Welch told The Huffington Post after the vote, adding that the death of bin Laden was a major factor in the increased support for withdrawal. "Nation-building for 10 years is ending, even though the votes came up just short. It's very clear there's a growing bipartisan awareness that the time for changing our policy in Afghanistan is here. This gives the President some latitude to accelerate the withdrawal of troops."
"He pointed out that the ranking members of the Appropriations Committee, Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee all voted for the McGovern-Jones amendment.
"One of the things many of us in the caucus would like to do is ask our ranking members to cooperate and coordinate in developing an aggressive policy," he added.
"President Obama has called for withdrawal from Afghanistan to begin in July and be completed by 2014, but he has not yet released an exact timeline. A recent Wall Street Journal report said that U.S. military officers in Afghanistan have drawn up "preliminary proposals to withdraw as many as 5,000 troops from the country in July and as many as 5,000 more by the year's end" -- a small fraction of the 100,000 U.S. troops who are currently in Afghanistan now."
Kenneth Stepp would have voted for withdrawal. Probably Hal Rogers voted for keeping the U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Withdraw Now!

Strange Patriot Act Bedfellows-Rand Paul And The ACLU-Mitch McConnell And Harry Reid
by: Hillbilly
Sun May 22, 2011 at 23:07:49 PM EDT

The conservative Campaign For Liberty, Rand Paul and the ACLU are all on the same page when it comes to the Patriot Act. They want to get rid of it. Then we have Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid on another page. They want to keep it.

We'll see if Rand Paul folds (gives into Mitch McConnell) and stays out of Washington, DC Monday May 23, 2011.

FDL
Rand Paul in February objected to an attempt at unanimous consent to extend the Patriot Act without a vote (on motion, without objection.) That meant it has to go through a vote and cloture for the first time since the first time it was up, right after 9/11. However, they called for a cloture vote for 5pm Monday, when Rand Paul was supposed to be out of D.C. Read more.

With a week left until three of the most controversial Patriot Act provisions expire, last night, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) made a back-room deal to reauthorize the Patriot Act for four years, avoiding the protracted debate over the extension that was sure to ensue, given the bipartisan opposition to the provisions. And like clockwork, Sen. Reid and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) introduced a bill, S. 1038, that will extend the provisions until June 1, 2015. The Senate begins its debate on Monday with votes possible that same night. Read More.

Email excerpt from the conservative Campaign For Liberty.

Dear Patriot,
On Thursday, Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell collaborated with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in a backroom pact to extend the so-called “Patriot” Act - with as little debate as possible – for 4 years before some of the most liberty-savaging components expire on Friday, May 27.
The surveillance state’s ability to snoop through your business records, pry into your library book checkouts, monitor so-called “lone wolfs,” and spy on your personal communications through roving wiretaps will be extended until 2015, which “coincidentally” is not an election year.
So much for all that lofty rhetoric last fall about adhering to the Constitution.
By taking a chainsaw to the Fourth Amendment, they have pledged their allegiance to the Surveillance State.
Even more galling, a cloture vote is scheduled for 5PM Monday, because they believed Senator Rand Paul would be out of town, and they would have a free hand to slip extending the government’s domestic spying capabilities through without anyone noticing.

Let's fix the Patriot Act!

"bin Laden is Dead, but Will the Patriot Act Live on?
"by DemandProgress, Thu May 05, 2011 at 11:31:01 AM EDT
"The Patriot Act is (again) up for renewal this month. Now remember, it was initially enacted as a supposedly-temporary measure in the wake of 9-11, but more and more of it keeps getting made permanent and the rest has been continually extended for the past decade.
With the death of Bin Laden, it's finally time for Congress to bring back the pre-9-11 legal norm, before we decided it was OK to toss out our civil liberties if the "bad guys" were scary enough. A key debate is brewing as the vote grows near: The right-wing will argue that Bin Laden's demise is evidence that the PATRIOT Act was justified, despite there being no evidence that it helped in any way in the search for bin Laden (other than constantly distracting law enforcement with thousands of spurious leads). We believe it's now time to fix the Patriot Act once and for all.
We must erase bin Laden's ugly legacy, not extend it: By ending the PATRIOT Act's erosion of our civil liberties, we can protect the freedoms that make America worth fighting for. Will you click here to sign our petition urging Congress to fix the Patriot Act?
Progressives and Tea Party Republicans initially blocked a long-term Patriot Act extension in January, but a three month-extension was passed in February. During the interim, the House and Senate have held hearings on potential reforms to the expiring provisions. The authorities in question are:
Section 215 powers which let the government secretly grab information about you without a court order.
Roving wiretaps which let the government spy on people without even telling courts who they're spying on.
The "lone wolf" provision which lets strip the rights of American citizens and treat them under the lower legal standards reserved for enemy governments.
These provisions were always unjustified, always an over-reach of the government's authorities, initially enacted only because a terrorized citizenry was too fearful to prioritize defense of its constitutional rights. With Bin Laden's passing it should be clear to all Americans: The era of the Patriot Act, of spying on Americans who aren't suspected of crimes, of heavy-handed abuse of our dearly held civil liberties, must come to an end.
Nearly 75,000 Demand Progress members have urged Congress to fix the Patriot Act. In April 3,000 of them called the White House to urge President Obama to veto any bill that lacks sufficient reforms. Demand Progress aired an anti-Patriot Act ad on MSNBC, CNN, and FOX News earlier this year. Now it's your turn to help.

Let's fix the economy!

"Sen. Fritz Hollings.Former South Carolina Senator
"What's Wrong With Washington?
Posted: 05/24/11 11:17 AM ET React Important
What's wrong with Washington? Nothing gets done. To understand, Washington has two problems: No one wants to pay for government and the economy is being off-shored.
"We haven't paid for government in eleven years. We didn't pay for President Bush's tax cuts, his prescription drugs for Medicare, and his wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. President Bush borrowed and added $5 trillion to the debt in eight years. If the CBO estimate is correct, by the end of September, President Obama will have added $4.5 trillion in three years. We had a strong government and a balanced budget in 2001. Now that everyone wants to start paying for government, spending cuts can take care of the regular increases in government for eleven years, but we'll need tax increases to pay for the tax cuts, prescription drugs, and wars. You can't pay $9.5 trillion for these things with just spending cuts or just tax increases. We need both.
* * *
"We've been hemorrhaging investment, research, technology, manufacture, jobs -- the economy for eleven years. It's not an economic cycle with the economy coming back. The economy is hemorrhaging off-shore. We've off-shored our defense so much that we are now begging Russia for helicopters for Afghanistan. And it has become difficult to produce for a profit in the United States. In this week's Time, Fareed Zakaria lists "five ways to bring unemployment down." He cites Germany's technical education that brought unemployment down "to an astonishing 20-year low in the midst of a global recession." We Southern governors realized the need for technical education when we carpetbagged the North for industry. Fifty years ago I instituted a technical education system in South Carolina that today produces Germany's BMWs and Boeing's Dreamliner. The country has technical training galore. Zakaria and Washington totally ignore the value added tax that 136 countries rebate on exports. Our corporate income tax is not rebated. Germany's 19% VAT is added when U. S. exports reach Germany. It's not just losing jobs to China, but Germany uses its 19% VAT to produce the President's green jobs or windmills in Charleston, S. C. Parts are manufactured at high cost in Germany; shipped to Charleston at 3% cost; assembled in Charleston at 3%, selling windmills 13% cheaper than any U. S. production.

* * *
"President Obama led from the front on getting rid of Osama bin Laden. But he leads from behind on jobs and the economy. When the debt was reaching its limit in May, the president moved the debt limit to August; let the vice president talk to Congress about the debt limit, and he went fundraising in Texas. The country doesn't need a candidate traveling the country raising $1 billion. It needs a president in the White House who leads to pay for government and rebuild the nation's economy. The CEO of Corporate America is responsible to build the company. The president is responsible to build the country. President Obama needs to lead the Congress against his G.E. Job Czar who has off-shored a majority of his production and is now off-shoring his research. President Obama needs to lead against the big banks, Wall Street, and the multi-nationals off-shoring for easy profits.
* * *
"The lesson of Vietnam was that you couldn't spread democracy militarily. Apparently, the lesson of China is that you can't spread democracy economically. If China had U. S. democracy and freedom, it would come apart as a country. To remain a country, China has to remain totalitarian with controlled capitalism. Rather than the United States developing democracy, China is impoverishing the United States. The president has to lead against the Council on Foreign Relations spreading democracy.

"Presidents know how to get the votes in Congress. Without a single Republican vote, President Clinton cut spending and raised taxes, even on Social Security, in 1993 that gave us eight years of the strongest economy and a balanced budget. . . .
The Republicans have yet to field a winner against President Obama. But next year it's going to be "the economy, stupid." Unless the President leads on the economy, jobs, and on paying for government, he could defeat himself."
Let's bring the troops home and fix the economy.

Kucinich slams attempt to subvert Constitution!

"Rep. Dennis Kucinich.U.S. House Representative
http://youtu.be/L3K02sgECmo
GET UPDATES FROM Rep. Dennis Kucinich
"Saying No to Permanent Global War
"The House is expected to vote soon on a bill that hands over to the president Congress' constitutional authority to declare and authorize war, substantially altering the delicate balance of powers that the Founding Fathers envisioned.
"The annual reauthorization of the Department of Defense contains unprecedented and dangerous language that gives the president virtually unchecked power to take the country to war and keep us there. This bill significantly undermines the Constitution, the institution of Congress and sets the United States on a path of permanent war.
"The Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) declares that the United States is in an armed conflict with not only al Qaeda and the Taliban, but "associated forces" and individuals, organizations and nations that support such forces. The president could then have the full legal authority to send American troops to engage in acts of war anywhere--Yemen, Somalia, Iran, even the United States--without constitutionally required Congressional authorization and, consequently, without any restrictions or oversight from the American people or Congress.
"This bill would also make permanent the degradation of law and human rights which has become Guantanamo. It imposes bans on the transfer of any detainee held at Guantanamo, including those who have been cleared of any charges. This means that the United States would be forced to keep imprisoning men who are known to be innocent or are not a threat. This bill not only allows the imprisonment of innocent people, but could mandate it.
"The bill also prevents the use of Article III federal courts for the trial of most terrorism suspects. This circumvents our system of justice and our protections under the Constitution, showing a lack of faith in US law enforcement and courts which are the constitutional venues for stopping terrorism. Our federal courts have a long history of trying terrorist suspects, while military courts are untested, lacking in legitimacy and of questionable effectiveness. Since 9/11, federal courts have prosecuted over 400 terrorism-related cases, while military courts have convicted only six.
"It's as if the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan never happened. These wars cost thousands of lives of our men and women in uniform, and perhaps a million civilian lives, with long-term costs approaching $5 trillion. Yet, in light of the attempt to try to make permanent an authorization for war, it is as if the consequences of the wars we are in have not occurred. It's as if our "humanitarian" military intervention in Libya, which has helped create full blown civil war and which has ensnared us in yet another military stalemate in the region, never happened. It is as if centuries of evidence of the ramifications of the military overreach of empires never happened. It's as if the Constitution, which requires Congress to have a say in when and where we go to war and which guarantees U.S. citizens the right to a fair and speedy trial, was never written.
"Congress must protect the American people from the over-reach of any Chief Executive who is enamored with unilateralism, pre-emption, first strike and the power to prosecute war without Constitutional or statutory proscriptions.
"Permanent, global war is not the answer. It will not increase our national security. Far from ridding the world of terrorism, it will become a terrorist recruitment program.
"Resposted by the author from The Nation.

I agree with Rep. Kucinich. Permanent War is not the answer. Let's bring the troops home now! Peace. Peace! Peace is the answer.

May 18, 2011|By Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel
U.S. ArmyA Gainesville soldier was among four American soldiers killed in Afghanistan on Monday, the U.S. Department of Defense said.

Pvt. Lamarol J. Tucker, 26, and three other Army soldiers were killed by insurgents on Monday afternoon in the city of Spin Ghbarga, in Afghanistan's Zabul Province, officials said.
Army officials said Tucker, an engineer, and the others were on a mounted patrol when they were fatally wounded by an improvised explosive device.

"Tucker, of Gainesville, entered the Army in January 2009. He served at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri before arriving at Alaska's Fort Wainwright.
"The three others killed were identified by officials as Staff Sgt. David D. Self, 29, of Pearl, Miss.; Spc. Bradley L. Melton, 29, Rolla, Mo., and Pvt. Cheizray Pressley, 21, of North Charleston, S.C.
"Tucker was assigned to the 73rd Engineer Company, Brigade Troops Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division out of Fort Wainwright, as were Pressley and Melton.
"Tucker's 4,000-soldier brigade began deploying to Afghanistan in mid-April, officials said, for a one-year tour supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
"The brigade was last deployed to Iraq, from Sept. 2008 to Aug. 2009. During that deployment, Army officials said the unit suffered five combat deaths and two non-combat deaths.
"A memorial ceremony will be held at Fort Wainwright, officials said."
Kenneth Stepp salutes the four brave American soldiers that were killed together by that roadside bomb in Afghanistan on Monday: Staff Sgt. David D. Self, 29, of Pearl, Miss.; Spc. Bradley L. "A soldier from North Charleston — whose family said he’d been in Afghanistan for just a few of days — was killed along with four other troops Monday when a roadside bomb exploded in the southern part of the country.
"The family of Army Pvt. Cheziray Pressley, 21, remembered him as a soldier dedicated to the service and as a son who loved to cut-up and make others laugh.
“He was a fun-loving young man,” said his father, Raymond Pressley on Wednesday, moments before he was to board a plane destined for Dover, Del., to await the return of his son’s body.

"Cheziray Pressley who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
"He said Cheziray’s decision to join the military “was something he really wanted to do — to serve his country, complete his education and see the world. He had a sense of patriotism and duty.”
"Cheziray Pressley was a 2008 graduate of Fort Dorchester High School. He had been married in December and had a young daughter. He was second-oldest of the family’s four sons.
"The Pentagon, which identified him as Cheizray, said Pressley was among four U.S. servicemen who died when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised device in Zabul province. All four were assigned to the Brigade Troops Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division out of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

No other details were immediately released, but the father was told that his son and the others were riding in a vehicle, and that another soldier was badly wounded in the blast. Military leaders have predicted a seasonal upswing in attacks on U.S. forces as the Taliban tries to retake territory lost in the past year.
"Pressley said his son last called home on Mother’s Day. During the call he expressed his love for his mother but didn’t say much about what his job was or what he was involved in. “He had, for one reason or another, had to keep that under wraps, to keep that secretive,” the father said.
"Cheziray had come home in December to get married to Dawn, his girlfriend of several years. The Pressley family has been in the Charleston area for a relatively short time, having moved in around 2007, from Abbeville. Church work brought the Pressleys here.
"Raymond Pressley said it was an easy decision for his son to join up, since other family members had already served in various branches and spoke positively of military life.
“He had a heart to serve his country,” he added.
"Cheziray had a number of hobbies. He loved sports, especially basketball and football, and enjoyed playing paintball.
“He always kept a smile on his face,” the father said.
"Funeral plans, arranged by the Fielding Home for Funerals, are incomplete.

Americans and Socialism.

Americans don't believe in socialized railways. Americans don't believe in socialized telegraph, telephone, radio, nor television systems. Americans don't believe in socialized interstate bus lines, nor socialized airlines, nor socialized banking systems. Americans don't believe in government operated factories, nor socialized manufacturing systems nor socialized farming. "The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the intergovernmental organization that oversees the global financial system by following the macroeconomic policies of its member countries, in particular those with an impact on exchange rate and the balance of payments. Its objectives are to stabilize international exchange rates and facilitate development through the encouragement of liberalising economic policies in other countries as a condition of loans, debt relief, and aid.[2] It also offers loans with varying levels of conditionality, mainly to poorer countries. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C. The IMF’s relatively high influence in world affairs and development has drawn heavy criticism from some sources.

The International Monetary Fund was conceived in July 1944 originally with 45 members and came into existence in December 1945 when 29 countries signed the agreement,[5] with a goal to stabilize exchange rates and assist the reconstruction of the world’s international payment system. Countries contributed to a pool which could be borrowed from, on a temporary basis, by countries with payment imbalances. The IMF was important when it was first created because it helped the world stabilize the economic system. The IMF works to improve the economies of its member countries.[6] The IMF describes itself as “an organization of 187 countries (as of July 2010), working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty.”

"IMF "Headquarters 2" in Washington, D.C.
"The International Monetary Fund was conceived in July 1944 during the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference. The representatives of 45 governments met in the Mount Washington Hotel in the area of Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, United States, with the delegates to the conference agreeing on a framework for international economic cooperation.[13] The IMF was formally organized on December 27, 1945, when the first 29 countries signed its Articles of Agreement. The statutory purposes of the IMF today are the same as when they were formulated in 1943 (see #Assistance and reforms).
"The IMF’s influence in the global economy steadily increased as it accumulated more members. The number of IMF member countries has more than quadrupled from the 44 states involved in its establishment, reflecting in particular the attainment of political independence by many developing countries and more recently the collapse of the Soviet bloc. The expansion of the IMF’s membership, together with the changes in the world economy, have required the IMF to adapt in a variety of ways to continue serving its purposes effectively.
"In 2008, faced with a shortfall in revenue, the International Monetary Fund’s executive board agreed to sell part of the IMF’s gold reserves. On April 27, 2008, IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn welcomed the board’s decision of April 7, 2008, to propose a new framework for the fund, designed to close a projected $400 million budget deficit over the next few years. The budget proposal includes sharp spending cuts of $100 million until 2011 that will include up to 380 staff dismissals.
"At the 2009 G-20 London summit, it was decided that the IMF would require additional financial resources to meet prospective needs of its member countries during the ongoing global financial crisis. As part of that decision, the G-20 leaders pledged to increase the IMF’s supplemental cash tenfold to $500 billion, and to allocate to member countries another $250 billion via Special Drawing Rights.
"On October 23, 2010, the ministers of finance of G-20, governing most of the IMF member quotas, agreed to reform IMF and shift about 6 percent of the voting shares to major developing nations and countries with emerging markets.[17] As of August 2010 Romania ($13.9 billion), Ukraine ($12.66 billion), Hungary ($11.7 billion), and Greece ($30 billion) are the largest borrowers of the fund.

"Assistance and reforms
"Main articles: Washington consensus and Structural adjustment program
"The primary mission of the IMF is to provide financial assistance to countries that experience serious financial and economic difficulties using funds deposited with the IMF from the institution’s 187 member countries. Member states with balance of payments problems, which often arise from these difficulties, may request loans to help fill gaps between what countries earn and/or are able to borrow from other official lenders and what countries must spend to operate, including to cover the cost of importing basic goods and services. In return, countries are usually required to launch certain reforms, which have often been dubbed the Washington Consensus. These reforms are thought to be beneficial to countries with fixed exchange rate policies that may engage in fiscal, monetary, and political practices that may lead to the crisis itself. For example, nations with severe budget deficits, rampant inflation, strict price controls, or significantly overvalued or undervalued currencies run the risk of facing balance-of-payment crises. Thus, the structural adjustment programs are at least ostensibly intended to ensure that the IMF is actually helping to prevent financial crises rather than merely funding financial recklessness.
"Following the recent economic crisis, the IMF has attempted to help emerging economies deal with large capital outflows.
"Criticism
Two criticisms from economists have been that financial aid is always bound to so-called Conditionalities, including Structural Adjustment Programs (SAP). It is claimed that conditionalities (economic performance targets established as a precondition for IMF loans) retard social stability and hence inhibit the stated goals of the IMF, while Structural Adjustment Programs lead to an increase in poverty in recipient countries.

The IMF sometimes advocates “austerity programmes,” increasing taxes even when the economy is weak, in order to generate government revenue and bring budgets closer to a balance, thus reducing budget deficits. Countries are often advised to lower their corporate tax rate. These policies were criticized by Joseph E. Stiglitz, former chief economist and senior vice president at the World Bank, in his book Globalization and Its Discontents.[27] He argued that by converting to a more Monetarist approach, the fund no longer had a valid purpose, as it was designed to provide funds for countries to carry out Keynesian reflations, and that the IMF “was not participating in a conspiracy, but it was reflecting the interests and ideology of the Western financial community.”
Argentina, which had been considered by the IMF to be a model country in its compliance to policy proposals by the Bretton Woods institutions, experienced a catastrophic economic crisis in 2001,[29] which some believe to have been caused by IMF-induced budget restrictions—which undercut the government’s ability to sustain national infrastructure even in crucial areas such as health, education, and security—and privatization of strategically vital national resources. Others attribute the crisis to Argentina’s misdesigned fiscal federalism, which caused subnational spending to increase rapidly. The crisis added to widespread hatred of this institution in Argentina and other South American countries, with many blaming the IMF for the region’s economic problems. The current—as of early 2006—trend toward moderate left-wing governments in the region and a growing concern with the development of a regional economic policy largely independent of big business pressures has been ascribed to this crisis. In an interview, the former Romanian Prime Minister Tăriceanu claimed that "Since 2005, IMF is constantly making mistakes when it appreciates the country's economic performances".
"The delay in the IMF’s response to any crisis, and the fact that it tends to only respond to them rather than prevent them, has led many economists to argue for reform. In 2006 an IMF reform agenda called the Medium Term Strategy was widely endorsed by the institution’s member countries. The agenda includes changes in IMF governance to enhance the role of developing countries in the institution’s decision-making process and steps to deepen the effectiveness of its core mandate, which is known as economic surveillance or helping member countries adopt macroeconomic policies that will sustain global growth and reduce poverty. On June 15, 2007, the executive board of the IMF adopted the 2007 Decision on Bilateral Surveillance, a landmark measure that replaced a 30-year-old decision of the Fund’s member countries on how the IMF should analyze economic outcomes at the country level.
"Impact on access to food
A number of civil society organizations[34] have criticized the IMF’s policies for their impact on people’s access to food, particularly in developing countries. In October 2008, former U.S. president Bill Clinton presented a speech to the United Nations World Food Day, which criticized the World Bank and IMF for their policies on food and agriculture:
We need the World Bank, the IMF, all the big foundations, and all the governments to admit that, for 30 years, we all blew it, including me when I was president. We were wrong to believe that food was like some other product in international trade, and we all have to go back to a more responsible and sustainable form of agriculture.
—Former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Speech at United Nations World Food Day,
October 16, 2008[35]
Impact on public healthIn 2008 a study by analysts from Cambridge and Yale universities published on the open-access Public Library of Science concluded that strict conditions on the international loans by the IMF resulted in thousands of deaths in Eastern Europe by tuberculosis as public health care had to be weakened. In the 21 countries to which the IMF had given loans, tuberculosis deaths rose by 16.6%.
In 2009 a book by Rick Rowden titled The Deadly Ideas of Neoliberalism: How the IMF has Undermined Public Health and the Fight Against Aids, claimed that the IMF’s monetarist approach towards prioritizing price stability (low inflation) and fiscal restraint (low budget deficits) was unnecessarily restrictive and has prevented developing countries from being able to scale up long-term public investment as a percent of GDP in the underlying public health infrastructure. The book claimed the consequences have been chronically underfunded public health systems, leading to dilapidated health infrastructure, inadequate numbers of health personnel, and demoralizing working conditions that have fueled the “push factors” driving the brain drain of nurses migrating from poor countries to rich ones, all of which has undermined public health systems and the fight against HIV/AIDS in developing countries.
"Impact on environment
IMF policies have been repeatedly criticized for making it difficult for indebted countries to avoid ecosystem-damaging projects that generate cash flow, in particular oil, coal, and forest-destroying lumber and agriculture projects. Ecuador for example had to defy IMF advice repeatedly in order to pursue the protection of its rain forests, though paradoxically this need was cited in IMF argument to support that country. The IMF acknowledged this paradox in a March 2010 staff position report [38] which proposed the IMF Green Fund, a mechanism to issue Special Drawing Rights directly to pay for climate harm prevention and potentially other ecological protection as pursued generally by other environmental finance.

While the response to these moves was generally positive possibly because ecological protection and energy and infrastructure transformation are more politically neutral than pressures to change social policy. Some experts voiced concern that the IMF was not representative, and that the IMF proposals to generate only 200 billion dollars a year by 2020 with the SDRs as seed funds, did not go far enough to undo the general incentive to pursue destructive projects inherent in the world commodity trading and banking systems—criticisms often leveled at the WTO and large global banking institutions.
"In the context of the May 2010 European banking crisis, some observers also noted that Spain and California, two troubled economies within Europe and the United States respectively, and also Germany, the primary and politically most fragile supporter of a Euro currency bailout would benefit from IMF recognition of their leadership in green technology, and directly from Green Fund–generated demand for their exports, which might also improve their credit standing with international bankers.
Criticism from free-market advocates
Typically the IMF and its supporters advocate a monetarist approach. As such, adherents of supply-side economics generally find themselves in open disagreement with the IMF. The IMF frequently advocates currency devaluation, criticized by proponents of supply-side economics as inflationary. Second, they link higher taxes under "austerity programmes" with economic contraction.

"Currency devaluation is recommended by the IMF to the governments of poor nations with struggling economies. Some economists claim these IMF policies are destructive to economic prosperity."
Kenneth Stepp says it is time for the United States to withdraw from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank! Should we increase our Debt Ceiling to finance those expensive overseas boondoggles? No! It is time to quit dumping money and the lives of American soldiers, sailors and Marines overseas. Bring 'em home. Withdraw from the International Monetary Fund. Withdraw from the World Bank. Withdraw from Iraq! Withdraw from Afghanistan. Let the rest of the world solve their own money problems--we have enough money problems of our own.

Kenneth Stepp salutes PFC. Robert Friese, killed in action!

"Community turns out for funeral of slain soldier
"Posted On: 5/14/2011
" HARRISON, Mich. (AP) — Hundreds of people lined streets in one mid-Michigan community to remember a soldier killed while fighting in Iraq.

The Morning Sun in Mount Pleasant reports Saturday that yellow bows were tied to trees and yellow balloons were released as the funeral procession for Army Pfc. Robert Friese passed by.

Friese grew up in Harrison, located about 60 miles northwest of Saginaw. The 21-year-old died April 29 after his unit was attacked by insurgents with a rocket-propelled grenade in Al Qadisiyah province.

He was a 2007 graduate of Harrison High School.

Harrison resident Dan Wilhelm said during the funeral that Friese "was a home town kid and everybody was proud of him."

The Pentagon said Friese honors included the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Iraq Campaign Medal."

Kenneth Stepp salutes PFC. Robert Friese, killed in action! Osama is dead! Let's declare a Victory and bring our troops home! Bring them home now!

Where do we go from here?

FROM THE TEA PARTY:
"A default would inflict catastrophic far-reaching damage on our nation's economy, significantly reducing growth and increasing unemployment," Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said in a letter.
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said if Congress fails to lift the debt ceiling and the U.S. defaults on its obligations "this abrupt contraction would likely push us into a double dip recession," painting the most explicitly dire prediction to date of the consequences of inaction.
In a heavily-anticipated response to Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who asked Geithner to document the economic and fiscal impacts of failing to lift the statutory debt limit, the Treasury secretary detailed a chain reaction that would cripple the economy, costing jobs and income.

AMERICA HANGS IN THE BALANCE!
"A default would inflict catastrophic far-reaching damage on our nation's economy, significantly reducing growth and increasing unemployment," said Geithner in the letter to Bennet which was dated May 13. "Even a short-term default could cause irrevocable damage to the economy."
Geithner has imposed an August deadline for Congress to lift the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling, but lawmakers are still negotiating over Republican demands to tie the move to spending cuts. And a portion of the GOP still remains skeptical about the need to act by the deadline at all, arguing that the consequences have been overstates.
"I the letter Geithner walked through the doomsday scenario he has been describing on the Hill. Default would cast doubt on the full faith and credit of the U.S., which would scare away investors and enable those remaining to demand higher interest rates on Treasury securities, which would have far-reaching negative ramifications. Increased borrowing costs would extend to families, businesses, and local governments, he said.
"Because Treasury securities set the benchmark interest rate for a variety of consumer credit products, an increase in interest rates could drive up the cost on everything from mortgages to car loans and business loans.
"A default on our obligations would also sap household wealth, threatening retirement savings; what's more, it could cut off Medicare and Social Security payments and cause another financial crisis, the letter said.
""A default on Treasury debt could lead to concerns about the solvency of the investment and financial institutions that hold Treasury securities in their portfolios, which could cause a run on money market mutual funds and the broader financial system," Geithner said in the letter.
"Ultimately he said the biggest threat would be a crisis of confidence in the United States. Confidence in the America's ability to meet its obligations creates demand for Treasury securities in the first place, which lowers the borrowing costs for the government and in turn consumers. It has made investments in Treasury securities a safe haven for investors in times of panic.
""A default would call into question the status of Treasury securities as a cornerstone of the financial system, potentially squandering this unique role and the economic benefits that come with it," Geithner said.

The Tea Party opposes raising the Federal Debt Ceiling. In the past, whenever the President wanted the Debt Ceiling raised, his own party members rallied to vote to raise it, and the opposite party voted the opposite. President Clinton quit running a Deficit. With his Republican majorites in both Houses of Congress, President George W. Bush requested and got at least three raises of the Federal Debt Ceiling, and ran up a lot of red ink on the Federal Budget. Now, it is the Democrat Obama that requests Congress to raise the debt ceiling. The difference is that now, as during the Clinton Administration, you have a split government--the Democrats control the White House but the Republicans control at least one House of Congress. Back then, the President balanced the budget. Now, Obama will either have to get some Republican cooperation in running the red ink, or he'll have to do like President Clinton did and balance the Federal Budget. What do you think? Are you a borrow-and=spend Democrat? Where do we go from here. Let us know. Kenneth Stepp.

Obama coming to Fort Campbell, Kentucky!

"Obama to honor troops, thank raid participants
By JIM KUHNHENN — Associated Press
Posted: 3:45am on May 6, 2011; Modified: 12:00pm on May 6, 2011
INDIANAPOLIS — President Barack Obama was bringing private words of gratitude Friday to troops involved in the killing of Osama bin Laden and delivering a public reminder that the fight against terrorism isn't over. His message was reinforced by an al-Qaida threat of retaliation for its leader's death.
After a stop in Indiana, Obama was visiting Fort Campbell, Ky., home to the Army unit involved in transporting Navy SEALs in and out of bin Laden's compound in Pakistan.
In addition to his private meeting with raid participants, the president, joined by Vice President Joe Biden, also will address soldiers who have returned recently from Afghanistan, speaking in a public forum likely to highlight the military triumph over bin Laden.
But the president has said there's no need to "spike the ball" and revel in bin Laden's death, and White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama's comments would reflect that attitude.
"I don't expect you'll hear the president spiking the ball and gloating when he speaks to troops returning from Afghanistan," Carney told reporters traveling with the president on Air Force One. "The point he will make is that while the successful mission against Osama bin Laden was an historic and singular event, it doesn't by any means mean that we are finished with the war against al-Qaida. The fight goes on."
That was underscored by a new al-Qaida statement posted on militant websites, which gave al-Qaida's confirmation of bin Laden's killing, opening the way for a successor to be named, and said that Americans' "happiness will turn to sadness." Its authenticity could not be independently confirmed.
It was the first statement from al-Qaida since bin Laden died in a U.S. commando raid in Pakistan five days ago, and a reminder that despite his death, threats to America remain.
"We are aware of it. We've seen the reports," Carney said. "What it does obviously is acknowledge the obvious, which is that Osama bin Laden was killed on Sunday night by U.S. forces. ... We're quite aware of the potential for (terrorist) activity and are highly vigilant on that matter for that reason."
At the same time, Obama was seeking to convey a return to the business of governing. Before arriving in Fort Campbell Friday afternoon the president made a stop in Indianapolis where he planned to promote his energy policies. He was greeted upon arrival by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who is contemplating a presidential run and would be considered a top contender for the Republican nomination to challenge Obama in 2012.
In Indianapolis the president also planned to address monthly jobs numbers released Friday, which showed that the economy added 244,000 jobs in April, beating expectations. At the same time, though, the unemployment rate ticked up to 9 percent.
Without bin Laden's death to overshadow it, the trip to Indianapolis to showcase a transmission plant that produces systems for hybrid vehicles would have policy and political consequences. Obama has been promoting his energy policies as a long-term answer to rising oil prices and U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The skyrocketing cost of gasoline had caused Obama's public approval numbers to dip until bin Laden's death shoved them back up. What's more, Indiana is a battleground state that Obama won narrowly in 2008 by less than 30,000 votes.
Still, the centerpiece of the day for the president will be the stop at Fort Campbell.
The fort is home to the 101st Airborne Division and many of its combat teams have returned recently from tours of duty in Afghanistan. But its main draw for Obama is the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the highly specialized Army unit that carried Navy SEALs to bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
The unit, known as Night Stalkers, has fought in nearly every U.S. conflict, from Grenada to Afghanistan, and was memorialized in the book and movie "Black Hawk Down." Many of its missions are classified and among its primary duties are flying special forces commandos behind enemy lines.
They are equipped with Black Hawk, Chinook and MH-6 Little Bird helicopters. Aviation experts said a helicopter used in the bin Laden raid appeared to be a stealthier, top secret and never-before-seen version of a routinely used special ops helicopter. The helicopter made a hard landing and was destroyed by the military team at the site.
Obama has tried to avoid rejoicing publicly over bin Laden's death. But even while hewing to his regular schedule of policy sessions and routine ceremonial events, he has maintained a steady stream of events that have kept the success of the remarkable commando operation at the forefront. On Thursday he visited New York to lay a wreath at ground zero and visit fire and police stations that responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, attack that was carried out by bin Laden's al-Qaida operatives. The president met privately there with victims' families, but in public Obama never mentioned bin Laden by name. He didn't have to.
"When we say we will never forget, we mean what we say," Obama told firefighters.
Associated Press writers Lolita C. Baldor and Kimberly Hefling contributed to this report.

Kenneth Stepp salutes the Commander in Chief Obama, and the valiant soldiers of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Good job, men--and women. A lawyer I know once said, "ten years is too soon for retribution!" Anyway, the message is out, if you are going to take action to terrorize the people of the U.S.A., you'd better save some money with a prepaid funeral plan!
